The #GCS2ndMile winner for the month of January, was ESS paraprofessional Joey Marycz from Tolbert Elementary School. Marycz received multiple nominations from his colleagues at Tolbert, as well as family and former students.  The common theme among the nominations was one of caring.  One student wrote in his nomination that “Mr. Joey” was his help and support when his mother had to work or couldn’t be there to take him to games or practices. Other nominations mentioned Marcyz’ dedication to his school outside of the classroom, serving as co-president of Tolbert PTO, assisting with school spirit nights and extracurricular events, and cheering on Warriors throughout the community.  Alecia Segursky, Gordon County Schools’ ESS Director, described Marcyz as an extraordinary asset to her department, “Joey has been amazing to watch in action this year. He has tackled every challenge that came his way and has helped everyone around him do the same. After school hours, Joey can be found working with Special Olympics and Camp New Adventure or supporting the Warriors. He is dedicated to improving services for all students with disabilities in Gordon County. He is selfless and spends and extraordinary amount of time supporting these students.”

Marcyz was surprised with the announcement this morning in one of the many classrooms he supports throughout the day at Tolbert.  The Board of Education will recognize him at the regularly-scheduled Board of Education meeting on February 12.
